I want to engage all my young students and keep them really interested in the lesson.

Children learn best when they are engaged by the material. It is sometimes hard to keep kids focused but they do better when they can relate to the material in the book. The ongoing storyline in Our Discovery Island is very motivating to them because they can become involved in what is happening. Books with characters that they get to know across all units through different activities and stories help them stay interested. They want to see what will happen with the characters in the next unit. It also helps when the themes are things that they can relate to – things from their reality like the family, school, food, friends etc.

I need activities to make sure the kids are learning and remembering new words and information.

Young learners need a variety of interesting activities. When new vocabulary or a new language structure is introduced it is important that they be exposed to it several times in many different ways. We look for textbooks that expose children to the language in a lot of different ways in a context that they can relate to. It is great for them when they become familiar with something in their textbook and then practice it in the Workbook and then see it again in a video format or on the iWB. Also they need to read about it, write about it and practice it before it becomes committed to memory. Songs, chants and games are really good for repetitive practice of the language.

I have a hard time introducing grammar in the classroom.

This is really a challenge because all teachers know that it is important to introduce the structure of the language in a way that kids can make sense of it. One thing that really helps is to introduce language in manageable amounts and in a way that is appropriate for the age group. Too much all at once is overwhelming for a young child who is likely not familiar with grammar terms in his or her native language. It is useful for the children to see the target structure in a small chart or box that they can use as a model for practice and as a continued reference. Take a look at the “Look” grammar boxes in the Student Book.

My students love to use the computer, so I want to incorporate this in a fun but educational way into my classroom.

Oh yes! Children today love to use the computer. They like computer games and CD-ROMs and many of them enjoy some online websites for children and even watch movies online. Some of the older children like some social networking sites where they can chat with friends. It is amazing what the kids are willing to do on a computer that they are reluctant to do in a book or on paper. All these elements are incorporated in the unique Online World and if internet access is hard to come by, the Student Book comes with a CD-ROM full of activities kids can use to practice what they learned.

I’d love to bring some fun into the classroom but still help keep students’ focus.

The students are excited when we can incorporate some of the technology that they love into the classroom. Children really enjoy things that are visual and interactive like DVD, CD-ROM, and ActiveTeach – a digital version of the Student Book that you can use on the Interactive Whiteboard or a computer & projector.

I’m being asked to provide evidence to the school and parents that my students are making progress.

That is really important because schools and parents want to make sure that the kids are learning - which means a lot of evaluation and assessment. Informal performance assessment as well as traditional paper and pencil tests, exams, and quizzes are needed throughout the year. Our Discovery Island has assessment games and tests in every Student Book unit to help track students' progress.
