Meet the Author Team

Irene Barrall is an experienced teacher, trainer and materials writer. She has worked in Europe and Asia, teaching both in schools and companies with a focus on Business English. She has contributed to a variety of English language teaching titles including the Intelligent Business and Lifestyle series for Pearson.


Nikolas Barrall is the English Language coordinator for Writtle College in Essex and has an MA in Teaching Modern Languages to Adults. He has taught English in Europe and Asia, specialising in both Business and Academic English. As well as writing for the Intelligent Business series he is also a regular contributor to Market Leader web lessons.


Christine Johnson was a Business English training consultant for more than 20 years before becoming an award winning author. She ran training seminars for companies in a number of countries around Europe, including some of the former Eastern bloc countries and Russia. Author of “Banking and Finance” in the Market Leader series (Longman, 2000), she specialised particularly in English for banking and finance.


Tonya Trappe is an economics and English graduate from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and has worked as a language teacher at various French universities. A specialist in effective communication, Tonya has given workshops and organized training sessions for professionals across Europe from Ireland to Russia and from Estonia to Croatia. As well as writing the award winning Intelligent Business series, Tonya is also the author of Insights into Business.


Graham Tullishas extensive experience as an ELT author and has written a series of business English and TOEIC preparation coursebooks. In addition to his activities as an author, Graham teaches at several specialist engineering schools in France and also co-ordinates the national entrance exam for admission to the French universities’ graduate business program.

Intelligent Business is benchmarked with the BEC suite of Business English exams.


Developed and administered by Cambridge ESOL, the Business English Certificates (B.E.C.) are available at three levels: 'Preliminary', 'Vantage' and 'Higher'. Complete practice tests are available for each of these three levels – simply choose a level you are looking for:

BEC Preliminary

Intelligent Business Elementary is benchmarked to the Preliminary level. The BEC Preliminary exam tests Reading ,
Writing, Listening and Speaking skills and is organised as follows:

Reading and Writing Test - 1 hour and 30 minutes - Reading divided into 7 parts; Writing divided into 2 tasks

Listening Test - approx. 40 minutes - divided into 4 parts

Speaking Test - 12 minutes - divided into 3 parts
